A British police officer. Coined as slang from Sir Robert Peel, who founded London's Metropolitan Police in 1829. Largely synonymous with “bobby,” which derives from the same name. The term was current throughout the 19th century and persisted in popular fiction long after the formal police had outgrown the nickname.
